History Behind American Traditional Tattooing

The roots of American Traditional tattooing can be traced back to sailors, military personnel, and traveling tattoo artists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

As sailors traveled between ports around the world, they brought home tattoo influences from different cultures and traditions. Over time, a distinctly American style began to emerge. The designs were bold, easy to read from a distance, and created to hold up well over time.

Few artists had a greater impact on the style than Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins. Working from Honolulu, Sailor Jerry refined traditional tattooing through stronger linework, improved color palettes, and cleaner application techniques. His influence helped shape what would become the modern American Traditional style.

Today, many of the designs associated with traditional tattooing can still be traced back to the foundations established by Sailor Jerry and the artists who inspired and followed him.
